Lumescent was founded in 2003 by Steven Katz, a veteran of the architectural lighting industry. Initially a lighting design professional for the architectural sector while learning theatrical techniques from industry leaders. Steve continued a focused concentration in the world of architectural lighting design utilizing the dramatic effects of the entertainment field. Recognizing that there was a void in the NYC marketplace – Steve set out to create a specialty agency offering a wide array of diverse products beyond just commercial or industrial luminaires. This was the genesis for Lumescent.


The buzz on Broadway this season is a hip musical called Passing Strange. It all began in Berkeley, CA with a mid-40s African American rock ‘n’ roll musician who goes by the single name of Stew. After a series of readings and workshops, Stew’s first musical — the story of a young black musician’s journey from adolescence to manhood — was produced by The Berkeley Repertory Theatre and The Public Theatre, garnering accolades along the way to Broadway, where it has settled into the Belasco Theatre, starring none other than Stew himself.
